Undefeated and powerful, 23-year-old cruiserweight Shawn Hawk is on course to be the most successful Native American boxer ever.

The strong and hard-hitting Hawk, from Thompson , S.D. , has a record of 15-0-1 with 13 knockouts since turning pro during April of 2004.

Except for two bouts in North Dakota , all of Hawk’s first 12 fights were in Washington and Idaho . Now that he’s promoted by Sycuan Ringside Promotions, Hawk knows he’ll box in more locations and gain increased television exposure.

“I’m excited to be with Sycuan Ringside Promotions,” said Hawk. “I’m looking forward to fighting in California and Las Vegas and having more people see what I can do now, and what I will be doing in the future.”

Hawk got his first opportunity Sept. 29, 2006 , on a nationally and internationally televised show at MCB Camp Pendleton ( Calif. ) on Sycuan Ringside Promotions’ “Salute to America ’s Heroes 2” benefit card, an event that, once again, was free to all military personnel and their families. Hawk stopped veteran Karl Evans in the first round, giving the youngster six straight knockouts.

After that Hawk endured a controversial and unpopular draw with Ed Perry March 19, 2007 , in Hollywood , Fla. He has rebounded with a resounding fourth-round knockout of Dennis McKinney May 11 in Lewiston, Idaho, and a first-round knockout of Bo Skipper July 14 in New Town, N.D.

Before the Camp Pendleton card, Hawk’s previous five foes who were flattened include, Doug Kaluza in the second round July 29, 2006, in Boise, Idaho; Joe Evans in the second April 28 in New Town; Shane Fisher in the second Oct. 27, 2005, in Worley, Idaho; Paul Purcell in the third July 8 in Boise; and Ken Schomber in the first June 16 in Worley.

“Shawn is an important addition to Sycuan Ringside Promotions,” said Glenn Quiroga, president of Sycuan Ringside Promotions. “Not only is he the first Native American boxer Sycuan Ringside Promotions has signed, he’s, first and foremost, a tremendous prospect.”

“We anticipate Shawn eventually being a force in the cruiserweight division,” said Willie Tucker, executive vice president of Sycuan Ringside Promotions.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Shawn,” said his father, Ray Hawk. “Not only is he with the up-and-coming promotional group in the country in Sycuan Ringside Promotions, this is a great example of Native Americans working with Native Americans. This is the kind of relationship that’s good for everybody, and we have no doubt it’s a relationship that will be successful.”

“It was important we put Shawn in an environment in which he can take advantage of his skills and abilities and, in turn, maximize his potential,” said Scott Woodworth, vice president of Sycuan Ringside Promotions. “That’s why Shawn is moving to Southern California so he can get more and better training opportunities.”

Hawk had an amateur record of 108-12.
